Apple’s Siri Soon To Be Challenged By Google’s Majel For Android - Apple’s Siri will soon be challenged by a Google-developed voice software called Majel for the Android mobile operating system.

The news comes via Android And Me which says that Majel is currently in the final stages of development.

If Google is finalizing its development of Majel, it only follows that the new voice input software may soon find its way to Android smartphones and tablet.

Regarding this, the report says that it’s looking as though Majel could be launched by Google towards the end of this year.

The publication’s Taylor Wimberly says that the people at “Google X are working around the clock on finishing the first release (of Majel) and the New York Times previously reported that one product would be released by Google X this year.

Majel will be more advanced that the fun but crude Iris which was released previously by a team of Android developers as an answer to Siri.

Nonetheless, the report also says that there is a possibility that Majel will be launched by January or February and not this year.

Google Siri Competitor of the Day: Google’s secret project lab, Google X

thephilter:

“Google Siri Competitor of the Day: Google’s secret project lab, Google X, is reportedly close to releasing an Android competitor to Apple’s Siri personal assistant, and the project has a geektastic codename: Majel.

It’s named for Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, wife of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and (more relevant to the Siri situation) the voice of the Enterprise’s computer.

Majel is based on Google’s existing Voice Actions for Android phones, combined with Siri-like natural language processing. That means users won’t be locked into using specific language to issue a command, as they currently are with Voice Actions.

The app’s computerized voice will probably get a boost from a fairly recent Google acquisition, speech technology firm Phonetic Arts, which was picked up in late 2010.

The initial release of Majel, which could be out before the end of the year, might only replicate one major function of Siri: Google searches.

The real question, though, is whether we can activate it by saying “Computer.”

Majel Vs Siri : Google Vs Apple [ Woooow,...]

Majel Vs Siri : Google Vs Apple [ Woooow,...] - Rumours are abound that Google is to launch its rival to Apple’s voice assistant Siri in the coming weeks with the project currently codenamed Majel.

According to the Android and Me website, Majel is named after after Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, the late actress who voiced the Federation Computer from Star Trek.

It will run as an upgrade of the Google Voice function already featured on Android devices. Instead of requiring specific commands to work, Majel will be compatible with more colloquial speech.

In a previous interview with Slash Gear, Google’s Matias Duarte had hinted as to the future of Google Voice stating, “Our approach is more like Star Trek, right, starship Enterprise; every piece of computing surface, everything is voice-aware. It’s not that there’s a personality, it doesn’t have a name, it’s just Computer.”

Whether or not Majel does turn out not to be a load of old baloney, you can expect Life Of Android to have all the latest news on Google Voice’s evolution.

Google Siri Rival Expands Voice Actions For Android

Google Siri Rival Expands Voice Actions For Android - Google is expanding its Voice Actions by developing a similar Siri function for the Apple iPhone. However, Voice Actions is now available on most Android phones.

Voice Actions allows users to give commands by saying keywords such as “send text to”. However, the updated software could allow it to respond to commands by using more natural verbiage, similar to their rival.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the feature has been codenamed “Majel,” after the woman who does the voice of the computer in Start Trek: The Next Generation.

It’s expected Google will use Majel for search queries at first, and will incorporate other commands such as controlling phone and app actions down the line similar to Siri functions.
